Were you always serious about writing or did it develop as a hobby?
Writing has never been a hobby for me, I’ve always had to write in some form or other. There are just too many ideas in my head to leave them there.
Fantasy is your preferred genre. What is it about fantasy that drives you to write it?
The advice writers keep getting is write what you know, and what I know best is fantasy. I’ve been a huge fantasy and sci-fi fan my entire life, so it was a natural inclination to write in the genre. I have tried writing other genres like mystery and romance, but I always came back to fantasy. I guess I have dragons and fairies in my blood.
With a horror novella, a short story collection, and an action movie guide already published, do you feel good about your shift to writing novels?
It’s not really a shift, more of a progression, and yes I am feeling good about the way things are evolving. When I decided to try and publish my books independently, I made the choice to start small and put several of my poems into a collection to test the waters. It went well, so I created a collection of my short stories since my books were still works in progress. Now I’m going to see if there are readers out there for my books.
You also write poetry. How does it compare to writing prose?
Poetry is easier for me to write, and it takes far less time. There’s no research involved or plot planning when I write poetry, it just flows from the thought to the page. But I think there is more creativity in writing prose, and more satisfaction in seeing all your ideas and characters mesh into a complete story.
Do you love writing enough to keep at it until your very last breath?
Yes, definitely. I started writing practically from the moment I learned the skill, and I’ll probably be writing until I can no longer hold a pen.
